You finally found your job. The one you feel you could do for years to come and hopefully retire from. But then something happens, a few years pass and it’s not what you thought it would be or you aren’t moving up like you had hoped. Maybe you’re feeling bored with your current workload… What do you do now?

If you’re looking for ways to continue on your current career path while still learning new, exciting things, professional development is a great option. Professional development is additional education courses, training, or certifications to help you excel in your field or learn a new skill related to your current job.

Professional development programs are available across all fields of employment including business and professional, healthcare and fitness, IT and software development, media and design, skilled trades and industrial, sustainability, and teacher continuing education.

For some, their degree requires continued education credits in the form of professional development. This generally includes learning new or updated ways of doing things in your field or refreshing current ideas that you may not use often. This is a popular practice with teaching degrees; as well as in the medical and fitness field, IT and software development, and media and design due to their ever-changing environments and new products that are constantly being created.

Aside from required educational credits, learning a new skill via professional development shows your superiors that you are able and willing to learn new things in order to help your company succeed. This could include learning a new language which could greatly increase your desirability in any field as being bi- or tri- lingual would allow you to communicate with a larger range of people within and outside of your business.

Another popular option for many businesses is education or certification in sustainability and going green. This is a fast-growing field that helps businesses stay up-to-date on how they can best help the environment in their everyday practices in an affordable way.

If you are feeling a little stuck in your current field, don’t give up or try to start over - add to your current skills so you can go further!
