Have you ever wondered what a dental assistant actually does? Why do they get the great pay they get? Surely that must be a hard job if it requires a certification, right? Let’s find out!

According to the Dental Assisting National Board the median salary of a certified dental assistant is $21.00/hr. They make this amount because what they do is integral to a dentist office. A dentist could not do his job if not for the dental assistants doing what they do.

So what do they actually do? Dental assistants provide patient care and support as dentists complete exams and procedures. Dental assistants generally perform polishing or explain proper dental hygiene to patients, but they also work with the dentist on procedures that could benefit from extra help. A brief list of other things dental assistants do include:

Assisting with dental procedures such as fillings, crowns, and extractions

Taking & pouring dental impressions (molds of the mouth)

        Preparing patients for surgery

        Operating equipment and monitors

        Talking with patients

        Performing administrative tasks

        Preparing examination areas

        Cleaning up after procedures

        Sterilizing equipment
